There are indications that the leadership crisis rocking the Lagos House Of Assembly may not abate anytime soon, as sources revealed the security personnels to the Speaker, Mojisola Meranda has been withdrawn.
Sources in the know informed The Page News that the security personnels was withdrawn Thursday morning. It was also gathered that this development may not be unconnected with President Bola Tinubu’s opposition to the speakership of Meranda.
The development follows what a source described as the intervention APC bigwigs in the crisis.
Sources said the APC big wigs formed a high-powered delegation directed by Tinubu to resolve the political tension at the Lagos Assembly, following the inability of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC)to find a solution.
Sources added however, that the delegation understood what the President wanted which the Advisory Council could not do and more disposed to carrying out the presidential order on the issue instead of considering what could be the fallouts.
According to another source, “the GAC members knew the implication of removing Meranda being the choice of the overwhelming majority of members of the House to lead them. Imposing another person on them may be the beginning of an unending turmoil in Lagos APC”
A source added that removing Meranda will be sending a bad signal, the effect of which the President himself may not be able to contain because of the interests she represents politically and traditionally in Lagos.
The Lagos Assembly crisis began in January 2025, when about 36 lawmakers removed Obasa as speaker and replaced him with Meranda, the then-deputy speaker.
Over 90 per cent of the lawmakers accused the impeached speaker of poor leadership style, perpetual lateness to legislative sections and plenary, high-handedness and disregard for colleague lawmakers and the executive, especially the governor, abuse of office and privileges, intimidation and oppression of members, misappropriation, among others.
Obasa, who was away in Atlanta, United States, when he was removed, had since faulted his removal and insisted he was still the speaker, even as his colleagues in the House remained adamant.
