The transfer window is in full flow as Premier League clubs look to bolster their squads before the season begins.
With summer international competitions like Euro 2024 and Copa America finished, and Olympic football wrapped up, teams are free to start negotiating.
Headline deals like Tottenham’s club-record move for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke and Chelsea’s swoop for Wolves’ Pedro Neto are just the tip of the transfer iceberg.
More deals are also expected to get over the line, with Manchester United at the centre of a significant sale and an intriguing double move. Mirror Football takes a look at some of the transfers that could be completed this week.
Matthijs de Ligt
United finally look set to complete the long-awaited deal for Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt. The 25-year-old’s move to Old Trafford has developed into a saga this summer, with many hurdles putting the deal into doubt.
The £58million signing of 18-year-old Leny Yoro made it seem as though a move for De Ligt had been put on hold. However, with the Frenchman sidelined for three months after suffering an injury in pre-season, a premier centre-half to partner Lisandro Martinez is needed ahead of the new campaign.
Despite Bayern Munich’s deal for the expected De Ligt replacement, Jonathan Tah, being on the verge of collapse, they are reportedly still willing to let the Dutchman depart and sign a five-year deal in England.
He has been pictured arriving at the airport in Germany alongside another prospective Red Devils signing and could complete a transfer to United on his 25th birthday.
Noussair Mazraoui
Alongside De Ligt, Moroccan right-back Noussair Mazraoui also looks to be joining United as he moves from Bavaria to Old Trafford. The 26-year-old joined Bayern in 2022 but hasn’t broken through into his first team. Like De Ligt, he will be reuniting with his old boss, Erik ten Hag, who coached the pair at Ajax.
The hope is that the pair can kick on under Ten Hag’s guidance once again. Mazraoui will cost just over £17m, and he’ll arrive hoping to stamp his mark on United’s defence.
First-choice right-back Diogo Dalot is often asked to deputise on the left and another set to make a move this week that will enable the Moroccan’s arrival.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka
With Mazraoui arriving, defensive ace Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been deemed the necessary sacrifice and will make a £15m move to West Ham this week.
The Englishman joined United in 2019 for a hefty £45m after a breakout season at boyhood club Crystal Palace, and despite all the promise, he has never truly lived up to his price tag.
The 26-year-old is renowned for his defensive skills, specifically in one-on-one situations, and arrives at the London stadium looking to oust current first-choice Vladimir Coufal.
Fabio Carvalho
Liverpool’s 21-year-old dynamo Fabio Carvalho will leave Anfield permanently this summer after spending just two years on Merseyside.
The Portuguese joined the Reds from Fulham for just £5m in 2022, and it was expected that he would become a pivotal part of the first team in time.
Loan moves to RB Leipzig and Hull City followed, but the midfielder has now been deemed surplus to requirements. Arne Slot’s side have negotiated a sizable fee for Carvalho, who’ll join Brentford for a reported £27.5m this week.
Conor Gallagher and Julian Alvarez
Not a Premier League incoming but a significant outgoing, both Chelsea’s English ace Conor Gallagher and Manchester City forward Julian Alvarez are expected to complete their moves to Atletico Madrid this week.
The Spanish club would have hoped to make an announcement earlier, but the transfers have been disrupted by the collapse of Samu Omorodion’s prospective Blues move.
The young Spanish striker was sure to head the other way as 24-year-old Gallagher arrived in Madrid, but the deal was called off. This left both transfers, including Alzarez’s £82m move from City, up in the air.
It is expected, however, that both the Argentinian ace and £38m-man Gallagher will still make the move. Renegotiation is reportedly taking place, and we could see Joao Felix head back to Chelsea. Though this double deal remains in limbo, both players are in Madrid and have contracts agreed upon, so the expectation would be the moves go ahead this week barring a meltdown.
