How Guardiola Got Bayern Job For Kompany Revealed

FC Bayern has found a new coach in Vincent Kompany, as supervisory board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has now confirmed. He also revealed that Pep Guardiola’s opinion had been sought.

Although it has been an open secret for days that Vincent Kompany will take over as coach from Thomas Tuchel after a long odyssey at FC Bayern Munich, there has been no official statement from the club so far. The sting left by Ralf Rangnick’s surprising rejection of the position by sporting director Max Eberl is too deep.

And so on Tuesday it was supervisory board member and former CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge who confirmed the deal and revealed a detail. “Our board has chosen Vincent Kompany as the new head coach. We are in the process of completing the final details and then it will be official,” Rummenigge told the broadcaster Sky Italia.

Rummenigge: “Guardiola helped us”

Rummenigge also reported that FC Bayern had sought the opinion of Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola, who was under contract in Munich for three years. “Pep Guardiola also helped us with Kompany, he spoke very highly of Vincent as a talented coach. Pep knows Vincent very well and his opinion is valued,” the 68-year-old continued. Kompany played under coach Guardiola for a total of three years until 2019.

Since Kompany’s contract in Burnley runs until 2028, FC Bayern will have to pay a transfer fee of a reported ten to twelve million euros. In Munich, he is said to have received a contract until 2027. Tuchel is also on the record champions’ payroll until 2025 for his current contract.

Bayern will be only the third coaching position for the former Hamburger SV defender. After leaving Manchester City, Kompany initially served as player-coach at RSC Anderlecht in 2019. Two years ago, he took over at Burnley FC, with whom he was promoted to the Premier League and was relegated again this season.
