The NBA Finals are upon us, with the Boston Celtics claiming a victory on Monday morning to overcome Miami Heat 4-3 in their Eastern Conference finals series. It’s the Celtics first Conference triumph since 2010, as they go in search of an 18th Championship overall and a first since 2008.

“Feels like it was always meant to be this way,” Celtics coach Ime Udoka said. “Difficult.”

Al Horford, who had been the record holder for most playoff games in NBA history without reaching the NBA Finals before Boston won Monday morning’s Game 7, said: “[I] just didn’t know how to act. Just caught up, excited. A lot of hard work. I’ve been a part of a lot of great teams, a lot of great teammates, and I’m so proud of this group.”

Over in the West, the Golden State Warriors enjoyed a rather more straightforward 4-1 triumph over the Dallas Mavericks to return to the Finals after their last appearance in 2019 – and for a sixth time in the past eight years.

“Tonight was different because we’ve done it before,” Kerr said after the Game 5 triumph over the Mavericks this past weekend. “But in a different way, it was incredibly meaningful given everything that we’ve been through organisationally over the last couple of years.”

This time last year, Klay Thompson was just starting to run again after consecutive ACL and Achilles tears. But following the conclusion of the 2020-21 season, which ended after two play-in game losses, Stephen Curry issued a warning: “You don’t want to see us next year.”

“It was more just a message for us,” Curry said. “It wasn’t for anybody else. It was a message for us to stay locked on the opportunity that was coming our way because we had built such a good momentum finishing the years, re-establishing what Warriors basketball was.”

Thompson said, “I dreamt about this day. Just my appreciation for moving my body again, I thought about that. I thought about those days I couldn’t run or jump, how lucky we are to do what we do. Just to be here again wearing this [Western Conference Champion] shirt, wearing this [NBA Finals] hat, I mean, I dreamt of this.”
