Open Letter To His Excellency, President Tinubu
By Moses Owopade
Your Excellency, no doubt, many of your policies since assuming office about 100 days ago have been receiving world wide comendation.
Dear President Tinubu, the National Youth Service Corps [NYSC] was a great initiative at inception. The sheme was to Foster unity among Nigerian Youth with lot of benefits. At the period, it was a pride to the nation.
Following several declines in the scheme, the cost implication which is unnecessary and worst of all, the attack, kidnapp and lost of lives of many of our graduates in the scheme, in the recent time. The Scheme needs to be revisited with the intention to either modify or stop the project.
The reports of adoption of many of the students on their Way to their duty post is a great disservice to the Scheme. The parents who had struggled to educate their children will be in high expectation, the entire family will be rejoicing, only to hear that their child has been abducted. This is a disaster to the good works of Your Excellency who is gradually rebranding the image of Nigeria.
Sir, the Scheme can be modified and I suggest the following:
1. Stop the camping and turn the camps to economic centres.
2. Stop the uniform which costs a lot for the government.
3. Make the students look for where they intend to carry out the service year. The government will only pay them a little.
Your Excellency, Ghana is doing this very conveniently and there is no trouble and does not place financial burden on the government. Apart from the cost effectiveness, the students are not under undue pressure. The one we are running now has become a great loss to the nation. When the students are kidnapped, government attention will be shifted to rescuing the abductees. The parents are exposed to all kinds of sickness hearing about the kidnap of their children.
It is my believe that attention should be on how to save this situation.
Thank you Sir.
